These days, more and more Americans are spending their vacations exploring the beauties of their own country. And what better vehicle than a motor home to see every detail of the trip while still enjoying the comforts of home? The motor home business generated more than $500 million in 1987, and entrepreneur Sandra Bate hopes to corner a big chunk of that market in the years to come.
Bate’s company, Rent-A-Motor-Home, Inc., supplies rental motor homes to travelers in more than 100 cities throughout the United States and eighteen foreign countries.
It all started with a $300 ad in the Los Angeles Times back in 1973. Bate sought to rent her motor home while she wasn’t using it and was surprised at the number of eager inquiries that a single advertisement sparked. Encouraged by the show of interest, she began wondering if her friends and neighbors would like to rent their own vehicles out as well.
“Back then, there were no other companies renting out motor homes, so we started with very low rates,” Bate remembers. “The business was part-time at first, but within six months things got too busy for that. I had to hire four employees to help out. We’d started out with one motor home, and by the end of the first year in business, we were renting sixty units.”
In 1979, Bate relocated her business to Las Vegas, Nevada, to take advantage of the tourist trade – as well as lower overhead costs. Five years later, Bate worked with Eastern Airlines to get her business linked up with worldwide travel agents via computer. With System One, clients prepay for motor-home rentals through their travel agents. A rental agreement is signed, deposits are collected, and if necessary, the motor home is equipped with household equipment such as dishes and silverware for $25 per person. The private owners of the motor homes receive a percentage of Bate’s fee.
A Bate Rent-A-Motor-Home representative can meet the client at the airport with the motor home, or bring it to the client’s hotel. After a walk through the unit, the representative turns over the keys. |
