| Alumni Feature of the Month Sandra Bate This month’s featured alumna is Sandra Williams Bate, who attended Lake Michigan College (LMC) in 1967. Sandra earned a degree in speech at LMC, transferred to Ferris State for one semester and then moved to California. There she earned a license in insurance and securities, and began work out of a luxurious motor home/office. The turning point in her life came when she tried to rent out her motor home. Sandra received such a large response to her ad; she saw an opportunity for a successful business venture. Today, she is the owner of Bates Rent-A-Motor Home, a highly successful company which rents motor homes. Her company is believed to be the only one its kind. Most people who rent her motor homes cannot afford to buy them, so Sandra is providing a service to people who want motor homes for vacations, but don’t want the payments. Many of her customers are European tourists who are visiting the United States for the first time. Other customers are business people who use them as offices when they attend conventions. Some of the people who have rented her vehicles include Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds and Lily Tomlin. Her business operates in more than 100 cities across the nation and in 18 foreign countries. Business is great, but Sandra said, “It could always be better!” Sandra said, “I have good memories of LMC. I was an ‘Indianette,” a dancer who performed at half-time for basketball games. My experience at LMC gave me the desire to achieve – I didn’t want to be a ‘nobody.’ I knew I had to have the courage to move on if I was going to make it.” |
