A number of distinguished alumni and service awards will be presented to various individuals during commencement ceremonies to be held Sunday, May 7, at Lake Michigan College (LMC).
The Clarence Beckwith Distinguished Alumni Award, named in honor of the first president of Lake Michigan College, is presented annually to an alumnus who has accomplished success in his or her personal and professional endeavors. This year, the award will go to Sandra N. Bate and Kenneth H. Summerer.
Bates is chief executive officer for Bates Rent-A-Motor Home Inc., a successful business which she started. In addition to LMC, she attended Ferris State College, the University of Grenoble in France, and the International School of Financial Planners. She is active in her community of Las Vegas, Nevada, participating in anti-drug abuse campaigns, and working with senior citizens and the handicapped.
Summerer recently retired as deputy director of community colleges for the state of Connecticut. In that position, he worked directly with the state’s community college presidents in fiscal operation and general administration of Connecticut’s 12 community colleges.
Previously, he served as interim president of Mattatuck Community College in Waterbury, Connecticut, and held numerous positions at other colleges in the state. He continues to be an educational consultant.
After graduating from LMC in 1948 in the first graduating class, Summerer earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, a master’s from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in education from Michigan State University.
The Alumni Service Award is designated for an alumnus who has made important contributions, personally and professionally, to his or her community and Lake Michigan College. |
