| Innovative entrepreneurs prosper by ignoring the beaten path to success By Roxanne Brown Sandra Bate Motor Home Rental Service Sandra Bate was a 19-year-old insurance and securities saleswoman in Los Angeles who worked out of a luxurious motor home/office. Not one day went by when one of her clients didn’t inquire about renting her motor home. Finally, the gifted business woman’s curiosity got the best of her and she placed an ad offering the vehicle for rent. The response was staggering. Fifteen years later, Bates-Rent-A-Motor Home is the only company of its kind that functions as a motor home rental referral network. “The majority of the people who rent them out really cannot afford them,” she explains. “We help relieved the burden by helping them make the payments.” About 60 percent of the company’s customers are European tourists who are visiting the United States for the first time. The motor homes have also become popular on-site offices for sales people who attend large conventions across the country. The company is hooked up with several airline computer systems and rakes in a lot of business through travel referrals, as well as through the Las Vegas hotel industry. Ms. Bate has rented her vehicles to an impressive client list, including Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds and Lily Tomlin. Business for Ms. Bate’s company has been good. “It could always be better,” she says with a smile. |
