Renting Motor Homes Makes a Hard-Driving Gal a Millionaire

By Larry Masidlover

To make some extra cash when she was 19, Sandra Bate began renting out her motor home – and it proved so profitable that she transformed her sideline into a full-blown business that now earns in the millions.

She’s the president of Bates Rent-A-Motor Home Inc., which operates in 35 U.S. cities and 18 foreign countries.

“I run a multimillion-dollar business and I’m a millionaire in my own right,” Bate told The Enquirer. “I have a late-model Cadillac Seville, and I own a beautiful home with a swimming pool and tennis court.”

Bate took her first step on the road to success in 1973, when she was a 19-year-old insurance agent in Los Angeles. She had a little-used motor home parked in front of her house, and people began asking her if she would rent it out to them for trips. “So many people wanted to rent the motor home that I started thinking:

“’Boy, it sure would be nice to have more than one motor home to rent,’” Bate said.

Her friends and relatives loaned her additional motor homes, and she began to rent them out on a commission basis.

Within six months she was handling 45 motor homes – and her fledgling business was underway.

In 1979 she went into the rental business full-time, with headquarters in Las Vegas, where many show business people rent her motor homes.

And Bate now has thousands of motor homes for rent!

“Jerry Lewis used one of our motor homes during his telethon to take a nap, shower and change his clothes,” Bate said.

When he’s racing, Paul Newman uses one of our motor homes right there at the track. And when Luciano Pavarotti was singing in Las Vegas, we had a deluxe motor home behind the stage for him to use as a dressing room.”

Other celebrities who’ve rented motor homes from Bate’s firm include Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett, Burt Reynolds, Joe Namath, Lily Tomlin and Chad Everett.

“My success is rooted in my philosophy,” Bate said. “Set your goals. Make the commitment. You must have dreams and desires, and stick with them until they become a reality.

“But remember, you can’t do it alone.

“It takes teamwork. Surround yourself with wise consultants and employees. It takes people and ideas to make dreams come true.”
