“You must have dreams and desires in your business endea vors and stick with them until they become a reality,” believes Sandra Bate, who owns a million-dollar motor home rental business. Bate, indeed , has turned her dreams into reality. In 1973, she worked for an insurance and securities company in Los Angeles, where she bought a motor home to use as a mobile office. “It was a beautiful and unusual vehicle called the Laguna 250 and only 10 of them were made,” she recalls. “People paid a lot of attention to it and were always asking me if I’d consider renting it out.”
Finally, she put an ad in the Los Angeles Times just to get an idea of how much interest in renting there would really be. “Well, the phone rang off the hook,” she says, “so I figured if there was that much interest, it would be great to have more than one motor home to rent out.” Six years later, Bate moved her booming rental business to Las Vegas. The new firm grew quickly, serving European visitors and entertainment and sports celebrities – the most frequent customers.
Bates Rent-A-Motor Home leases all of its vehicles rather than owns them, because as Bate says, “It doesn’t pay. People want to rent fairly new, clean motor homes. Leasing allows us to trade them in for new ones on another lease after a couple of years.” The company now thousands of motor homes on a lease basis and arranges rentals in U.S. cities nationwide and foreign countries. Bate’s success was crowned in 1984 by the link-up with Eastern Airline’s SystemOne Fly and Drive program. This fully automatic motor home reservation system links the company to more than 22 participating airlines, making it the first RV-rental company to provide booking capability for motor homes while offering commissions to travel agents.
