In the Driver’s Seat of A Multi-Million Dollar Motor Home Business
Sandra Bate was just trying to rent her motor home. She never thought today she would be sitting in the driver’s seat of a multi-million dollar motor home rental business in 33 cities in the United States and 18 foreign countries.
Sandra is the president of Bates Rent-A-Motor Home Corp., which she founded about 13 years ago in Los Angeles.
While she was working in the insurance and securities business, Sandra brought a motor home to use as a mobile office. After being approached by several people interested in renting her motor home, she decided to test the market. “I put an ad in the Los Angeles Times and I had six calls right away.”
Within six months, Sandra was coordinating the rental of some 45 motor homes.
In 1979, Jim DeLisse, who at the time was general manager of the Royal Las Vegas Hotel, convinced Sandra to start an office in Las Vegas.
Using a toll-free telephone number and agents in several cities, Sandra’s company grew quickly during its early years.
The company made the “big time” in the travel industry when it teamed up with Eastern Airline’s SystemOne Fly & Drive program.
“It was a natural to make Las Vegas our base of operations, because it’s such a tourist center,” says Sandra. “Eventually, everyone visits Las Vegas.” |
